Karen Condon
Karen Condon lives in Western Massachusetts and works at a large university there, captioning classes for deaf students, which means lurking in the wings with her laptop, typing faster, probably, than anyone you know. It's not her calling, though it pays the bills and provides plenty of writing material, and she winces when people say - inevitably - "Wow, you must type really fast."
She prefers to call herself a fiction writer. She doesn't like to call herself a breast cancer survivor, though she did survive breast cancer, because for her, the term recalls the beribboned gift bags filled with swag that were gleefully handed to her at festive moments, such as upon awakening from surgery. Still, she wrote a novel based on the experience. And her stories have appeared in The Iowa Review, Bottomfish Magazine, Sonora Review, Kansas Quarterly, Arkansas Review, Antigonish Review, and Fiddlehead. Read more Karen Condon on her blog at www.karencondon.blogspot.com , and the publisher's web site, www.brownstreetpress.com . Karen's book, Are You A Survivor? goes on sale in December 2008.

I caption classes for college students, which involves setting up two laptops, one for me, one for the student, connecting them with a wireless connection, and typing anything anyone says for the entire class.
I stand outside the lecture hall, waiting for the students from the previous class to file out. One after the other they flip open their cell phones and disappear, as if being beamed up to the mother ship. I drag my rolling computer case into the lecture hall and begin to set up. I always set up in the center, behind the last row, with my back against the wall. The back of the hall is where students go to not pay attention. The last row fills the fastest. |

I'm a liberal. I am pro-choice and anti death-penalty. I oppose the Iraq war, I voted for John Kerry, I recycle, and I've believed in global warming from the start. I listen to NPR between seven and nine in the morning. Then, between nine and noon, I switch to AM and listen to Dr. Laura Schlesinger. I know. She's pro-life, pro-war, pro-military, pro-Bush, anti-feminist, and I bet she doesn't listen to NPR. She and I cancel each other out. Yet I listen with rapt attention as she dispenses her bitter advice, her voice snapping with sarcasm. It's as bracing as a strong cup of coffee. |

- F. Lawrence Caslin
Two rows of mouthless creatures standing in two lines on either side of the operating table, their eyes fixed on me, unmoving. They were waiting for the anesthesia to take effect before they pounced.
We had had two hours to kill before my surgery was scheduled. In the waiting room, my husband and sister sat to my left, and to my right was a woman flipping through an old copy of People magazine, front to back, back to front, front to back, back to front, without reading or stopping to look at pictures. I glanced at her to find her glancing at me. |
