ImageImageMy Mother has claimed to have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) for years now. She would tell me how she would start a project and before completion, her mind would wander and the project would lie untouched, unfinished for days, weeks, forever. I never could understand why she, and so many other people, instantly jump to ADD. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of good, old fashioned boredom? It’s part of the reason, lack of time being the other reason, why we don’t sit and read an entire book in one afternoon. Everyone needs a break at some point!

My Mother is now on medication for ADD and when she actually remembers to take it, it seems to help her. She often sees common tendencies in my sister and I, leading her to evaluate the situation and then use said situation to diagnose us as also having ADD. Again, I go back to boredom, or perhaps you remembered something all of a sudden and you want to take care of it before you forget again. Does that mean I have ADD? I think not!

ImageWhat does lead me to believe that I might have ADD was what transpired yesterday when I got home from work:

  • There was a Bed, Bath and Beyond coupon in the mail when I got home. I was going to turn around, go back down to the car and put it in the glove box so I would always have it. But I decided to pee first and THEN go back down.
  • While I was in the bathroom I realized that sink needed to be cleaned from where my boyfriend had shaved earlier. As I was cleaning I noticed that one of my earrings was in the soap dish. I knew the other earring was in the bedroom somewhere.
  • When I went into the bedroom I started looking for the earring when I noticed that my boyfriend hadn’t put away his shoes.
  • As I was putting away his shoes, I saw an old sketchbook that I had when I was in high school and had dreams of growing up to be a fashion designer. I took the book down and sat on the bed flipping through it. Written in the back was a phone number that I didn’t recognize, so I of course jumped up and grabbed my phone to call it to see who it was.
  • The number was disconnected but it did remind me that I needed to call my Dad. As I was dialing my Dad’s number I remembered that I had wanted to finish downloading some pictures. After a few rings of the phone, I gave up and went to the computer.
  • I booted up the computer but instead of instantly downloading the pictures, I decided I would check my email first.

Listen, I’ll be honest, this went on for a little while longer. Ok, a lot longer. But what it comes down to is: I never put the coupon in the car, I never did clean out the sink, I never did find the other earring, I never did finish putting his shoes away, I never did find out who that number belonged to, I never did call my Dad back and I still haven’t downloaded all the pictures. So I guess, once again, my Mother was right.

Damn it! I hate it when she’s right.
