I moved to Tennessee in 2004. Within days of moving I knew all about the road construction which was coming to Interstate 40.
It's coming! The highway is falling down around us! Traffic and chaos and turmoil will ensue! Any minute now! So today? Four years later? They closed an area of the highway. About one mile of the highway, in fact. And the media? Came out in droves.
The newspaper has covered this event for weeks. There have been numerous local television programs advising of us of the dangers. The precautions we all must take. Where we can go. What we can do. Even Dolly Parton and her big boobies have been all over the television, hard hat and all, letting us know how awesome it will all be when it's done. Someday.
This morning I bravely took the same route that I take every single day, certain that I would have numerous delays and probably be late to work. I drove slowly and carefully and you know what happened?
Absolutely. Nothing.
In fact, it was a much easier commute. Because I think everyone was scared to get on the highway.
No one bothered to inform the media that this was a non-event. It was really sad. Because they were there, taking pictures with their cell phone cameras and reporting such riveting events as, "Well. Seems pretty quiet out here today."
Thanks for that, Chip Weathers or wherever the hell your name is. I'll bet you are wishing you went to medical school now.
It occurs to me that the media can do this with anything. Carnie Wilson eats a hotdog! Is she gaining back all the weight? Liv Tyler sneezed! Call EXTRA! Miley Cyrus showed her bra strap! Film at eleven!
I get that. I get that's how they make money. Commercial endorsements and whatnot and then everyone gets paid and they are all happy. They might get discovered and go on to bigger and better things. It all works out great for everyone, even if it is totally stupid and dramatic.
Somehow, I just don't think SmartFix 40 coverage is going to win any awards for journalism. Even with Dolly's assistance.
It's just not news.
