In an effort to further tie up more of my finances in long-term payments, and find more excuses to stay indoors, I signed up with Direct TV. In order to get all the football games and channels I "needed," I signed up for one of their "monster" packages. No 150 channels in our house. You can hit channel 8836 and still be searching for CNN.
I'm still exploring all my channels. It's literally taken me weeks to go through them and decide what is worth watching. I've found that Direct TV should be targeting their advertisements based on their channel lineup. Here are a few freebies if they're ad dept. is reading.
"Direct TV--9 uninterrupted channels of home shopping with Rachel Ray."
"Direct TV--If you're a white Christian, go check out channels 325-360."
"Direct TV--More porn than you can shake your a stick at!!"
I've also run across a channel I've never heard of before. ID. Investigation Discovery. This is a 24 hour channel which documents criminals across the globe, and the investigation into their crimes. It's kind of odd to me that crime is glamourized in this way. I suppose "murder TV" was copyrighted.
I'm sure you've heard the ads on Discovery channel for "Shark week," for months leading into this programming. They show gory scenes of sharks attacking people...bloody water, kids running away from the beach. ID takes a similar approach. It's fairly disturbing.
TV announcer guy (speaking in low movie credit voice): "Ted Bundy as you've never seen him before!!"
Me (thinking quietly): Isn't he dead? What's to see?
TV guy: "Follow his every move through Washington and Florida as he tempted pretty teenage women into their DEATH!!" Images of skulls, hair, and bloody knives flash across the screen. By this time, the announcer is blatantly yelling. I am almost waiting for him to announce "Decapitation week."
And what happens when ID runs out of programming? I'm sure they don't want to have to show Eva Gabor slapping a policeman. This may be the only group of writers who actually hope that crime is on the increase...their sweeps period depends on it. |
